things and stuff

July 24th, 2008 (05:39 pm)
tedious

my mood: tedious
my music: outkast - b.o.b.

-i've hurt my back and it hurts.

-also- i've been testing mandolins.

i think i want to get an electromando- possibly an ashbury.
(the action looks quite low, which i like; but the neck maybe a little too narrow.. hmm..)
i've tried quite a few models/makes now, and all i've really concluded is that the expensive ones are much (much) nicer than the cheap ones, which is absolutely no help at all.

- also- some of you might just have noticed there's a watchmen movie coming out..
wasn't really sure how to feel about it at first but, ultimately, i've decided to err on the side of unreasonably crotchetty and cynical.

the impossibility of reworking such a texturally sprawling, multi-faceted, behemoth aside, i was initially quite enthused by dave gibbons' support for the project (his contribution to the comic is so often under-valued). to be honest, though, i just don't think there's a movie in there.

this leaves 2 possibilities:

(1) the film is faithful to its source material but, for that reason, not a good film. this makes me cross.
(2) the film adapts its source material to better suit a filmic context, altering the structure and narrative. this makes me cross.

-also- ooh, i like this song :)

over-excitable

my mood: over-excitable
my music: teevee

i do appreciate that this is horribly belated, but i finally finished reading 'darkness calls' today..

on the whole: best. hellboy. ever.

i'm impressed by how the seemingly disparate story elements (some of which have been ongoing for 15 years, now) are starting to miraculously weave together like a big, demon-y, woven thing.

it was particularly interesting to see how well this series manages to maintain mike's iconic, graphic-y, style, without compromising everything that's such a joy about duncan fegredo's; the artwork succeeds in being appropriately reverential, and yet unmistakably idiosyncratic at the same time, and i'm not even quite sure how that's possible.

duncan's work on the 1991 'kid eternity' is still some of my favourite comic book artwork ever. it's not one of the more celebrated grant morrison titles, but i'd certainly urge anyone with an interest in such things to check it out; not least because it represents a rare instance of their working together :)

fed

my mood: fed
my music: teevee

haven't left the house (ie [info]darkstream 's house) all week, what with feeling generally very ill and crappy.

significantly made up for it, though, by doing quite expensive shopping over the internet.

got me one of these, signed and embossed-

james jean : invasion

-having convinced myself that james jean represents a sage investment.

(his books certainly do seem to have accrued in value; so much so that they may now, in fact, be the most expensive things in my entire flat- and that includes my bed.

needless to say, the impending "xoxo" is a source of much excitement..

so i've pre-ordered two copies- just in case)

..

also, i think my new icon is pretty cool :)

confused

my mood: confused
my music: tricky - bombing bastards

too ill to go out tonight- instead i am staying home alone to do work..

now that just aint right..

somehow doubt that anything prescient will emerge, however- the entire field of archaeological research appears to have crumbled for the foreseeable future; everyone preferring, instead, to talk about the new indiana jones movie.

i'm fairly sure that's the reason why, when looking for updates on the neanderthal genome project, i accidentally ended up researching the constituent parts of kellogs' indiana jones breakfast cereal (largely some kind of chocolate puff, as far as i can tell).

the link is here, just in case anyone's really interested..

hungry

my mood: hungry
my music: crystal method - glass breaker [force mass motion mix]

we went to see the original cut of 'grindhouse', at the cinema, last night.

congratulations must, surely, go out to edgar wright; for managing to turn the word 'don't!' into a readily quotable catchphrase.

admittedly, no one else at the screening seemed quite as amused as we were-

it may have been the pick-n-mix making us hyperactive.
